Australia

 More than kangaroos and koalas

* * *

I only realized how big Australia is when I was there.

When you see movies that talk about the vastness of Australia, the jeeps have tanks on the roof and you do not really understand why.

We drove on a country road, past a gas station, we thought we would come to the next gas station, but then there was a sign, the next gas station in 357 miles. At that moment it was clear to us why the Australians have tank canisters with them. We turned around and filled up, we didn't want to take the risk.

Australia has beautiful nature and incredible biodiversity.

I want to tell you about Airlie Beach today, because we really liked this small coastal town.

Airlie Beach

The resort of Airlie Beach, is the base for exploring the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. The stretch of coastline is bordered on one side by the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands, which offer stunning views of the Coral Sea on one and on the other side  the rainforest-clad hills of Conway National Park. A true natural spectacle.

Walks are a must here, in the evening you can watch the cockatoos, choose a tree to sleep in. You can snorkel and see a variety of tropical fish that make their home in the crystal blue waters.

A couple of facts

Airlie Beach is a small town with a population of around 1200, which increases enormously in the Australian summer months. Sailors, small cruise ships and tourists then wake the city from its slumber. From the port go to the present Whitsunday Islands and seaplanes fly over the Great Barrier Reef. Not cheap but a one-time thing not to be missed.

In 1770, Captain Cook discovered the Whitsunday Islands. There are 74 islands and the main islands are Hamilton, Hook, Hayman and Whitsunday. Whitsunday is the largest of the islands.

Surely you've seen a picture of the Heart Reef, it's made here.

What's the best way to get there?

Flight to Proserpine or direct to Hamilton Island

Of course you can also take a bus, but keep in mind a flight from Sydney to Proserpine takes 2.5 hours, a bus takes 38 hours

With the camper you are of course freer, information about booking can be found here

Well, this area is relatively expensive, but if you are traveling with a camper, you can park for free for 48 hours at the indicated places. No other country has so many places.
