Land of the Khmer and Angkor Wat

* * *

The Kingdom of Cambodia is located on the Gulf of Thailand and borders Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. Capital of the country is Phnom Penh.

The largest river in the world also flows through Cambodia, the Mekong. Another important body of water is Tonle Sap Lake.

This Land has 64 islands, the most famous being Koh Rong, Koh Samit and Koh Tang.

Popular coastal town is Sihanoukvilles, from here it goes to the island of Koh Rong.

A little bit of history

Cambodia emerged from the kingdom of Kambuja. The heyday was from the 9th to the 15th century. The ruins of Angkor, Banteasy Srei and Sambor PreiKuk, let us only imagine what incredible splendor was created here.

In 1863 Cambodia was under French rule and was part of French Indochina.

Cambidia became independent in 1953, until the military coup in 1970. The Khmer Rouge and their cruel guerrilla tactics killed between 1.7 and 2 million people. The victims were ethnic minorities and religious people. Unfortunately, a lot of landmines were also used and to this day there are still a lot. In 1979, Vietnamese troops overthrew the Khmer Rouge. Cambodia remained occupied by Vietnam until 1989.

In 1993, with the participation of the United Nations, a constitution was drawn up and the monarchy restored.
