Australia
it is the smallest of the continents.

* * *

As already reported before, I only realized how big Australia is when we were traveling there. Australia has an area of approximately 7.6 million km2. This makes it the sixth largest country in the world. But Australia is sparsely populated, with a population of just 25.8 million, most of whom live in the big cities. The capital of Australia is Canberra and not Sydney as most people assume. However, Sydney is the biggest city in Australia. We were in Sydney, it's just adorable and has an incredible amount of green space, which I think is simply beautiful. So why isn't Sydney the capital. Sydney and Melborn both wanted to be capitals and so they decided to find the golden Point in the middle and made Canberra the capital.

Australia consists of 6 states, 3 territories and 7 outer regions.

The neighboring countries are Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand.

Nature and landscape

Wow, well I have to say that I have never seen so many beautiful birds as in Australia. Birds that we here in Europe only know from the zoo or cage live, here in the wild as it should be. But also many insects, reptiles and amphibians are unique here. It is worrying that there are more venomous than non-venomous snakes in Australia. Because there are also plenty of spiders and scorpions, many people keep antidotes in the fridge that as if you would be bitten you wouldn't make it to the nearest hospital. Scare, no, stay on the right side of the road and stick to the rules, you don't work in the field or in the jungle. That's why there are 755 national parks and 12 World Heritage sites in Australia.

A little history

Before Europeans arrived in Australia, Aboriginal people had lived on the continent for at least 50,000 years. Originally, Northern Australia was linked to New Guinea and there were cultural exchanges between the countries. Approx. 2200 BC immigrants came from the Indian subcontinent and even if one does not know exactly, the Dingos probably came to Australia at that time. The Dingo is the Australian wild dog that lives independently from humans.

Australia was only discovered in the 17th century by the Dutchman Willem Jansz (1606). The southern tip became New Holland in 1644. Britain later used the Sydney area as a penal colony and shipped the convicts here (1788-1868). Another penal colony was established near Brisbane in 1824.

In 1851 gold was found near Melbourne and a gold rush broke out and shaped the history of Australia. People no longer came to Australia as a punishment but at their own request.

Australia became independent on January 1, 1901.

Faith and religion

Most Australians are Christians but a large proportion, around 30%, are non-denominational.

Rental car and camper

In Australia it makes sense to inquire about some parts by car or, even better, by camper. Of course, please don't forget that left-hand traffic applies in Australia. Don't forget the spare canister either, hahahaha

What can I do

Destinations already described in the country:

Coming soon to my website:

  • Brisbane – capital of the state of Queensland, a great city.
  • Sydney – Not only the opera house is worth seeing in Sydney. I especially liked the parks and the birdlife. But also the port area. A harbor tour and a visit to the zoo on the other side of town are worthwhile.
  • Cairns - Beautiful clean city. If you're visiting Australia in the European summer, then Cairns is the place to go because it's not quite as chilly. Cairns is only 1.5 hours by speedboat from the Great Barrier Reef and is therefore a good starting point for diving and snorkeling.
  • Urangan – town with less than 10,000 inhabitants. Good location to visit the present Fraser Island.
  • Great Barrier Reef - The longest reef in the world. Unique underwater world. Home to whales, dolphins, 1,500 species of fish, six different species of turtles, coral and so much more.
  • Maryborough- Beautiful typical buildings. P.L.Travers the author of Mary Poppins was born here.
  • Rental car tour
  • Gold Coast – Perfect motorhome tour to get to know Australia.
